Windows 7 Compatibility with Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX Extensions version 1

I recently tried to load a .NET 2.0 application that utilizes AJAX version 1 extensions on my Windows 7 x64 machine. At first I was prompted with a message indicating that I needed to turn CustomErrors off, because the application was not loading. So I modified the web.config and set the attribute to Off.

Then I try the application once again and it fails, pin pointing the problem to the System.Web.Extensions. So I research a little and find that there is a compatibility issue with Windows 7 x64 and ASP.NET AJAX Extensions version 1, but there is no issue with Windows 7 x86 according to Microsoft. Here is their article http://bit.ly/6h9AQ8

At the very bottom it recommended to modify the registry to enable the logging of Assembly binding, but it also mentioned that it would impact performance. So I opted not to. At this point there is nothing much that I can actually do until Microsoft releases a hotfix or update. Then again I suppose I can use VMWare Workstation 7 and run it on a VM machine.

SQL Server 2008 Developer Fails to install on Windows 7 Home Premium x64

After getting a new laptop it's a must (for me at least) to get SQL Server installed. It's hard for me to live without it. Anyhow I ran all the windows updates and decided to install SQL Server 2008 Developer. To my surprise the installation failed right off the back. first I received a notice from the Program Compatibility Assistant (PCA) informing me that I must apply SP1 after the installation, but before I run the actual program. Here is the link to SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. http://bit.ly/8C7otS

Then shortly after I clicked on the "Run Program" button I received the following error:

Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created.

Now I am panicking and decide to search google to see if others have encountered this very error, but before I do I realized that I had already closed the error message and need it so I can research the exact error message. So I re-run the setup and this time it works. I mean still get the PCA prompt, but I don't get the Invoke error as before. So now I decide to reboot so I can try it again. Sure enough the error comes back, but if I run the setup a subsequent time it works. Then I get to the "Setup Support Rules" and there is a Red X listed next to "Restart Computer" and just to the right of that the Status is "Failed". So I reboot again and ultimately end up in this loop. So I head back to google and find an MSDN SQL Server Setup article that speaks of the exact same error here: http://bit.ly/8dqzNr

I figured in order for me to get passed the (PCA) I'd better turn off the User Account Control (UAC) first. So I do and consequently I don't get the Invoke error. Surprisingly it actually allows me run through the installation process. Up until it hangs on at SqlEngineConfigAction_install_startup_Cpu64. So I terminate the install, reboot and uninstall MSSQL 2008.

Once again I reboot and attempt to install via command, but not before I reset the (UAC) back to its default setting. Everything seemed like it was going well then all of a sudden all of the command prompt windows terminate. So I wait about 10 minutes just to make sure and decide to run the setup and this time the install is successful. Once installed I follow up and install Service Pack 1. http://bit.ly/8C7otS. All is good and now I am ready to rock and roll.

I have been contemplating on upgrading to a newer laptop. For the price and not to mention the battery life I am seriously considering on the Toshiba Satellite (A505-S69803). I need to expose myself to Windows 7 on a regular basis and there is no better way then on a computer that has it installed. I know I could simply upgrade to Windows 7 from my current Vista platform, but I think it is time to move on. Which is what I am doing so I put my old laptop which I really never used on craigslist. Hopefully I'll get some more great leads. My old laptop sold within 12 hrs of posting. Thanks CraigsList!

Anyhow the battery life is said to last nearly 7-9 hours. Which is remarkable. Perfect for me when working while I am in flight. I'll need to upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium x64 to at least a 64 bit edition of Professional or perhaps Ultimate which I really doubt I need. Professional is about right where I need to be, then again Windows 7 Home Premium, Home Basic and Home Starter can run IIS 7.5. Per Microsoft: http://bit.ly/5fsL6H. So theoretically I can get by with Home Premium. We will see. It's not like I am going to have it join a domain anytime soon. Either way I purchased it today and so far I am impressed.
